ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) has a very strong impact on society nowadays, spreading extensively through all age generations. With gadgets available to small babies (to be self-entertained and to be quiet in the corner), to elementary and college students, to the corporate world, as well as to the elderly; everybody who is into social media is either directly or indirectly influenced by AI. AI concepts transcend to a broader context in society, into the heart of the church, and to houses of formations for priests and religious. Seminarians are continuously exposed to AI, which also affects their critical analysis in their formation journey.
Our aspiring young men, as well as their whole generation, are already exposed extensively to technology. Our current communication is mainly by means of social media: messenger, WhatsApp, or Zoom. Gone are the days of using letters and the post office. Current modes of vocation workshops and sharing are different from those during my time in the early ’90s. Inasmuch as we need to improve our vocation campaigns and realize that social media is a good platform, I feel that technology is steadily hampering the surge of vocations. Maybe we need to reinforce our current formative structure, preserve its value, and take cognizance of the widespread influence of AI.
