CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING, PURSUING THE COMMON GOOD

It is the honourable responsibility of Christians to contribute by means of active participation to building a society where the common good is fundamental. As Pope Benedict XVI affirmed: “There is a need for authentically Christian politicians but, even more so, for lay faithful who witness to Christ and the Gospel in the civil and political community.” (Address to the 24th Plenary Session of the Pontifical Council for the Laity).

A SUNDAY IN ST. HUBERT’S

FR JORGE was invited to preside over the various Eucharistic celebrations on a Sunday in the parish of St Hubert’s, Alexandra, a township North of Johannesburg. The first two masses went very well, but as the break between the second and the third masses was shortened, Fr Jorge was given no chance to rest.

The third mass, in isiZulu, started well, but just before the readings, Fr Jorge felt the urgent need to relieve himself. The priest’s house is about 500 m from the church, so Fr Jorge wondered when the most ideal moment to disappear from the altar and quickly run to the house, would be.

The occasion presented itself at the moment of the offertory. Thus, he left the sanctuary, removed his vestments, and ran to the priest’s house. When he came back to the church, the procession of gifts was commencing, and he could gladly receive the offerings brought to the altar. Nobody seemed to have noticed his absence. Thanks be given to the beautiful and prolonged singing of amaculo.
